The campaign started with a young woman and activist named Anne Jarvis, who wanted to honor the passing of her mother as well as spread appreciation for all mothers across the nation. However, when the holiday grew more commercialized, Anne Jarvis began to protest the holiday saying that making a profit off of pre-made cards and gifts was not the meaning of the holiday.
